# WHMIS 2015 training

> The workplace chemical-safety training you provide before your first job if you handle cleaning chemicals: what it is, who needs it, and how to get certified.

If your work involves cleaning chemicals, you provide **WHMIS 2015** certification before your first job. It is one of the things you set up after you are approved, alongside your insurance and police check.

<Info>
  WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) is Canada's standard for safe handling of hazardous workplace products. WHMIS 2015 training covers labels, safety data sheets, and safe handling, the basics for working with cleaning products.
</Info>

## Who needs it

| Work you do | WHMIS needed |
| ---------------------------------- | -------------------------------------- |
| Residential or commercial cleaning | Yes |
| Car detailing | Yes (detailing uses chemical products) |
| Lawn care                          | No                                     |

If you only take lawn care work, you do not need WHMIS. If you take any cleaning or detailing work, you provide it before your first job.

## When you need it

You do not need WHMIS to get approved. You are approved on your government ID, your profile photo, and your background check. WHMIS comes next, before you accept your first job that involves chemicals.

## How to get certified

WHMIS 2015 is a short online course. Several providers offer it, and free options exist.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Pick a provider">
    The Pro app shows a curated list of WHMIS 2015 providers on your application page, with free options listed first. You can use any of those or another recognized provider.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Take the course">
    Most courses take under an hour and finish with a short quiz. You complete it online at your own pace.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Upload your certificate">
    When you pass, you get a certificate. Open your application in the Pro app and upload it. A reviewer confirms it, then it is on file.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  You arrange WHMIS yourself, and it is often free. Pick any recognized WHMIS 2015 provider that issues a certificate you can upload.
</Tip>

## Keep it current

If your certificate carries an expiry date, renew it before it lapses so your training stays current. We flag it before it expires.
