Zulma is selective so that customers know they can trust every crew member who walks through their door. The requirements below apply to all applicants. Cleaning experience is a plus but is not required — read on for more detail.

Checklist

Before you apply, confirm you meet all of the following:
  • 18 years or older
  • Legal right to work in Canada
  • Reliable transportation to job sites anywhere in the Niagara region
  • Smartphone running iOS 15+ or Android 11+
  • Pass a vulnerable-sector criminal record check (Zulma coordinates this; it’s free)
  • Complete WHMIS 2015 online training — required for anyone handling commercial cleaning chemicals; Zulma provides this free of charge
  • **Carry your own 2MCommercialGeneralLiabilityinsurance(typically2M Commercial General Liability insurance** (typically 40–80/month)
  • Three professional references — cleaning experience preferred but not required; Zulma actually calls them
  • Comfortable working independently in client homes
Cleaning experience is preferred but not required. Many of Zulma’s top earners started without any prior professional cleaning background. What matters most is reliability, care, and respect in someone’s home.

Why you need your own $2M CGL insurance

You might wonder why you need your own policy if Zulma carries a $5M umbrella. Here is the full picture. Zulma’s 5Mumbrellacoversplatformlevelliabilityandbackstopscrewmembersforcatastrophicclaimsthosethatexceedyourownpolicylimit.However,Zulmasinsurer(Zensurance)requireseveryindependentcontractorcrewmembertocarrytheirown5M umbrella covers **platform-level liability** and backstops crew members for catastrophic claims — those that exceed your own policy limit. However, Zulma's insurer (Zensurance) requires every independent contractor crew member to carry their own **2M Commercial General Liability policy** as the front-line coverage for the actual work you perform. There are two practical reasons this matters for you personally:
  1. It protects your personal assets. Your own CGL insurer fights for you specifically — not just for Zulma — if a damage or injury claim arises from your work.
  2. It strengthens your independent contractor tax status. Carrying your own business insurance is one of the markers the CRA looks at when determining whether someone is a genuine independent business operator. This protects your IC classification under CRA rules.
Most sole-proprietor cleaners in Ontario pay 4080/monthfora40–80/month for a 2M CGL policy. Brokers who commonly serve this market include Zensurance, APOLLO, and ALIGNED.
If a damage claim ever arises, your 2MCGLrespondsfirst.Ifanythingexceedsyourlimit,Zulmas2M CGL responds first. If anything exceeds your limit, Zulma's 5M umbrella backstops it. Theft claims are covered separately by Zulma’s janitorial bond. You will never face a claim alone.

Skills check before solo jobs

Your first booking is shadowed by a senior crew member. You do not take independent jobs until you pass the skills check. This protects both you and the customer. After that, crew must maintain a 4.7★ minimum rating across their last 20 jobs. Falling below that threshold results in a pause for retraining or removal from the platform.
